Mediation restores stability to children’s lives
In a family dispute case, ACT Foundation for Dispute Resolution supported a mediation process between a divorced mother and the mother of her former husband, after conflicts escalated over child custody, visitation arrangements, and communication mechanisms. Over time, these disputes began to affect the children’s psychological stability and strained family relationships.
The mediation sessions provided a safe and neutral space, grounded in principles of confidentiality, neutrality, and voluntary participation. This allowed both parties to express their concerns and needs, shifting the focus from personal disagreements to practical solutions that prioritize the best interests of the children. Through constructive dialogue, the parties built mutual understanding and reached a clear, voluntary agreement regulating custody, visitation, and communication arrangements. This contributed to creating a more stable environment for the children and reduced family tensions.
One participant in the mediation expressed the impact of the experience, saying: “For the first time, we talked about what the children need, instead of focusing on what each of us wants.”
The process helped reopen channels of communication among family members and strengthened their ability to manage conflicts more cooperatively, serving the children’s interests and minimizing the impact of family disputes on them.
This experience highlights the role of mediation in addressing family conflicts by fostering dialogue, building trust, and reaching voluntary, sustainable solutions that consider the needs of all parties, while giving priority to the best interests of the children.
